Indian polyurethane industry: Showcase of futuristic polyurethanes

By Debarati Das
Focused on ‘Futuristic Polyurethanes,’ - theme for 2017, the Indian Polyurethane Association (IPuA) organised its 5th PU TECH Exhibition and Conference in Greater Noida, Delhi, India, from 8 to 10 March.
The Indian Polyurethane Industry is a rapidly growing industry which has registered double-digit growth over the past five years and is expected to double every four years in the coming decade. India is expected to become the second largest polyurethane market in the Asia Pacific Rim, IPuA said.
The three-day exhibition featured over 250 exhibitors that included raw material producers, equipment suppliers, end-users and the industry at large to showcase a comprehensive growth of technology and markets.
“India today processes 565,000 mtpa of polyurethanes and this is expected to cross the 1 million mtpa mark in the next three to four years. Polyurethane is a designers’ polymer unparalleled by any of its kind when it comes to allowing technologists to chemically design and develop specific end products. At PU TECH 2017, our aim is to make the industry aware and increase applications using polyurethane and also make the industry technologically savvy,” said Mukesh Bhuta, chairman, IPuA and promoter, Expanded Polymer Systems Pvt Ltd.
Polyurethanes plays an important role in minimising food waste through temperature controlled food supply chain, reduction of global warming gases emission through lightweight materials in automobile structure & buildings insulation, high-performance materials and coatings in the renewable energy mechanics, conversion from waste to wealth through wood binding.
“PU Industry is thriving and India is one of the major drivers for the growth along with China. India, however, faces the challenges of reduction in energy for transport and building, hygiene & safety & combating. Polyurethanes can meet these challenges by insulation, cold chain, recyclability and durability providing huge opportunities for PU growth to about 2.5 million tonnes per annum. We in the PU industry have to make it happen,” said Steen Weien Hansen, vice president, Huntsman Europe.
To further strengthen the PU industry in India, IPuA has also recently established subsidiary bodies for promotion, including India Insulation Forum, Spray Foam Alliance of India, Indian Sleep Products Federation, India Moulded Products Forum. It has also established Virtual Technical Centre in Pune and Polyurethanes Today Magazine activities are continuing.
“India is a very important market for polyurethanes and has a wonderful potential for growth. I expect a great conference of this type which brings together leaders of the industry from all over the world together leads to better production and faster growth of the industry,” said R C Bhargava, former CEO and current chairman of Maruti Suzuki and the Chief Guest of the expo.
Polyurethanes cater to a wide variety of market segments ranging from automotive, two wheeler, railways, refrigeration, insulation, bedding, comfort products, construction to coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers. And as the industry stated that no one can ignore the potential of this sector, the next PU TECH event in 2020 would come back with more promise for the future.
