Prism Surface at Surface & Coating Expo 2016

In a conversation, M K Ganesan, Managing Director, Prism Surface Coating Pvt Ltd, with Shivani Mody from WOC TV speaks about sustainability and challenges in the paint industry.
Tell us about your magic painter gun product
For the last 100 years, the paint industry is using compressed air as the force for atomising the paint. When used at 6 bar pressure there’s a wastage of 50-60 percent of paint and only 30 to 40 percent of air goes to the component.
So, after 100 years, we have launched a product which does not use compressed air for atomising the paint, instead, it uses dry warm di-humidified air. This air is sprayed at a pressure of 0.6 bar, instead of 6 bar pressure.
With such a low-pressure there will be minimum wastage of paint, with more transfer efficiency (at least increased by 30-40 percent) and paint savings. Plus, this product eliminates problems related to compressed air, like humidity content, oil content and power savings for almost 50 percent.
Apart from this, it uses an environment-friendly technology where the VOCs are less in the exhaust air. Also generating minimum paint sludge, where less paint goes to the water. In turn, it gives way for less usage of chemicals, reducing pollution and making effluent treatment easier.
Challenges in surface & coating industry
Most painters have many years of experience in using compressed air. To change their mindset and make sure this equipment is compatible along with the painters and paint is a big challenge faced by the company.
It’s not a plug and play equipment. It requires a better incubation period during which we have to handhold the customers and go through the experience with them. Making sure that the parameters are set and repeated as good as in a compressed air system. Working with the painters and paint companies, we are sure to achieve the results. It takes some time to break their conventional mindset.
Focus on sustainability
In general, both US and Europe have strict environmental regulations, like Clean Air Act which was enacted in the year 1970, to meet and develop sustainable paint technologies. However, this act is not yet implemented in India or Asia, but the consciousness about these regulations is increasing. Based on the awareness people are going towards environment-friendly products. When you mean environment-friendly, this is one step in the same direction. Where our product can cut down a lot of VOCs and paint sludge, keeping the environment clean.
