BHARUCH, INDIA: Four labourers died and 13 others were injured following leakage of poisonous phosgene gas at the toluene diisocyanate (TDI) plant of Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd (GNFC) at Dahej in Bharuch, Gujarat. This is the second such incident at the PSU’s plant as a similar leak in January 2014 affected over 21 labourers, media reports stated.
TDI is a hazardous organic chemical. It is used in the production of flexible polyurethane foams to make automobile seating, furniture foam, mattresses etc.
The Bharuch District Administration’s Disaster Management team, along with GPCB and police, reached the spot and began probe after the Dahej police registered a complaint.
“Four persons have been killed due to poisonous gas leakage from reactor gasket at GNFC plant at Rahiad village in Dahej taluka,” said district collector Sandip Sagale, reported PTI.
The mishap took place late on Wednesday night when mechanical failure in a chemical reactor at the plant caused leakage of poisonous phosgene gas. Rajiv Kumar Gupta, MD of GNFC told CNBC-TV18 that a mechanical failure happened at the company’s Dahej plant and as a precautionary measure, it has been shut down.
