BASF’s coating solutions comply with emission guidelines in China

BEIJING, CHINA: To abide by the current volatile organic compounds (VOCs) guidelines, including the tightened threshold values for use in China, BASF supports the wind energy sector with special coating solutions for wind turbines.
The company focuses on energy-efficient and resource-conserving formulations for both manufacturing and application of its products. Coating solutions developed and sold under the Relest brand features high abrasion resistance and elasticity, therefore offers long-lasting protection from extreme weathering impacts.
Rotor blade surfaces, in particular, have to withstand extreme stresses such as wind, hail and rain, for this purpose it has developed a special coating system comprising of gelcoat, putty, edge protection and topcoat. The reliably used two-component polyurethane compounds offer an especially ecological alternative to solvent-borne products and hence meeting the current volatile organic compounds (VOCs) guidelines, including the tightened threshold values for use.
The threshold limit values for industrial coatings is expected to come into effect by 2022 in China, and they are already satisfied by the comprehensive wind energy industry portfolio offered by BASF's coatings division.
To curb air pollution in China's capital, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection has adopted a policy paper that provides for the two-stage reduction of emission levels for maintaining and repairing wind turbines and other structures. In line with this regulation, the threshold values valid up to the end of 2016 will be tightened again starting in 2017.
