We talk about smart cities, modernization of infrastructure and mega projects that can define the growth of the country. However, the one word that can define the strength of these projects, and at the same time, the failure of these mega structures is – Corrosion.
Corrosion is one of the most underestimated factors in any industry today even though it is an issue which effects any and every industry in some way or the other. If not identified and treated on time, it can lead to major disasters. Apart from financial losses, corrosion gradually weakens the structures posing serious threat to property and life.
National Association Of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) International, in its study International Measures of Prevention, Application and Economics of Corrosion Technology (IMPACT) estimated the global cost of corrosion to be $2.5 trillion, equivalent to roughly 3.4 percent of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The study further found that implementing corrosion prevention best practices could result in global savings of between 15-35 percent of the cost of damage, or between $375-875 billion. This only highlights the role of corrosion management in the industry.
Corrosion can be in many form – humidity in the environment, contact of chemical agent, changing climatic composition or simply challenges to create industry usable water from different water sources.
Every industry is facing the dire threat of corrosion in some way or the other. What matters is how seriously is corrosion taken by the industry. Handling corrosion does not have a symptomatic remedy. It is a journey that needs to be taken from the first step of onwards and continuously monitor throughout its lifespan to assess and slowdown/ stop the deterioration of the components with time.
The right anti-corrosion coatings can protect the surface from various corrosion agents like humidity, moisture, salt water, oxidation, and exposure to a variety of environmental or industrial chemicals and prolong the life of the structure and increase its productivity. Anti-corrosion coatings find application in a range of end-user industries including marine, oil & gas, refinery & petrochemical, chemical plants, power generation, industrial, infrastructure, transportation, and aerospace & defense, among others.
