CALHOUN COUNTY, US: One person died and two others were injured in an industrial accident at DAK Americas in Calhoun County (US), Coroner Donnie Porth said.
The person killed in the accident has been identified as 63-year-old Alton Zeigler of Columbia.
The accident occurred as a maintenance crew was working on a large industrial pump used for transferring liquid, molten polymers, Porth said.
“Something happened and the polymers escaped and we have yet to determine exactly what happened, but the polymers actually came in contact with the three victims and one did not survive the injury,” he said.
The surviving victims were transferred to Palmetto Health Richland and were going to be transferred to the Augusta Burn Center, Porth said.
Porth said the area where the accident occurred was confined to a 20-yard by 20-yard space.
“It wasn’t widespread. It was a localized incident,” he added.
“We will continue to stand with DAK Americas and provide whatever assistance they need to move forward from a horrible day,” said Lee Prickett, Calhoun County Administrator.
DAK purchased Carolina Eastman’s polyethylene terephthalate-manufacturing operations in Calhoun County in 2011. PET is a plastic used in drink bottles and another packaging.
