New generation of coatings for growing shed, barn market

Focus on appearance, protection, production efficiency drive demand for advanced solutions.
By James Logan
The market for sheds, barns and other outdoor storage units is growing. Technavio, a leading global technology research and advisory company based in London, England, recently reported that demand for these structures will grow by 4 percent annually through 2021.
Innovation is driving the industry, too. Mostly plain and utilitarian until recent years, storage sheds for garden supplies, outdoor furniture, bikes, grills and recreational equipment are becoming larger and more stylish to integrate with home exteriors, and to satisfy design-conscious homeowners.
Meanwhile, building products manufacturers are meeting the challenges for more versatile and durable shed and barn substrates by developing a new generation of products, such as LP SmartSide® by LP and HardiePlank® by James Hardie. As a long-time supplier of coatings and paints to the shed and barn market, PPG is formulating new solutions for this expanding and dynamic industry, as well. This is helpful for the many shed and barn manufacturers that have application requirements for the industry’s newest substrate materials.
